How to Shelf Mark Rare Books: Best Practices and Labeling Methods

Labels on rare collections (books, manuscripts, documents, photo albums, etc.) are often glued directly onto these objects. Over time, this can cause damage to the original binding materials, and in most cases, this damage is irreversible. In this blog, I will share my experiences from the past few years of thinking about and experimenting with ways to deal with these labels on rare book collections. Some methods have proven to be effective and safe, while others have not. As conservators, we always prioritize the reversibility of any technique we apply to rare objects. Rare Book Labeling in Libraries A) An 18th-century binding damaged by a new archival label. Labeling Recommendations for Modern and New Archival Materials (Books, Magazines, etc.): For general collections, acceptable acid-free book labels are available from library suppliers. Alternatively, if it is absolutely necessary to label the inside of a book cover directly, a soft pencil ...

Clean off the old glue from the spine

For rare books restoration and conservation purpose; in many cases, spine lining, and animal glue should be removed (cleaned off) completely, in order to restore and conserve the sewing or the spine. Several techniques are used for loosening and clean off old glue from spines. Be careful when you clean off the animal glue from the book spine. Watch this video tutorial, demonstrate one of the most applied practice. In this video methylcellulose solution with a concentration of 4% has been used (Viscosity: 2000 cPs at 2% in water, pH 7.0.) The Endband collection album that you search for

During last few months I was searching and collecting Endbands (Headbands) images. trying to classifying those images according to the headband period and technique, or according to its name. But recently there is a lot of debates about the Endbands codicological terms and names, some conservators say that the number of different endbands and different variations of endbands is s o great that another system of classification and naming needs to be devised. According to some researchers and books, there is some sort of classification for Endbands (Headbands) which researchers use, for example, the book Headbands, How to Work Them, by Jane Greenfield published in Jun 2001 this book includes step-by-step instructions on how to do various types of headbands. With easy to follow instructions . Lots of different headband styles are included with figures. It covers more than the usual headbands. With some sort of...
