Paper Mending techniques Episode 1 - Repair paper straight tear

Straight tear

These tutorial episodes are for trained conservators who have the training and the experiences as well as the materials and tools to do this. However, if you are not a trained conservator and do not have the right materials for such repair and have some books with cuts and tears please don't use all types of commercial self-adhesive tapes these products should be avoided in historic document conservation and restoration. keep in mind the reversibility possibility of these products.

Also, you should keep away from
  • All types of scotch tape, sellotape, Etc.
  • Filmoplast P Tape, it is an archival grade material, but not recommended for rare books due to its reversibility.
  • Heatset tissue (shiny and uses heat). However, it is reversible with isopropyl alcohol, acid-free, and buffered with magnesium carbonate. As well it has long fibers, and it is transparent.
Paper mending and repair techniques and secrets. Episode one is about mending straight tear with three different techniques (it is available now on my youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/sherif3afifi). in this tutorial, I will spotlight on the paper straight tears restoration and repair. A straight tear is when the paper fibers split apart quite evenly,  and mostly towards the paper grain direction.

Some materials used in this episode I would like to highlight

Japanese tissue:
A strong thin paper made from vegetable fibers. May be made from one of three plants: Kozo plant, Mitsumata, and Gampi tree.

Reemay:
  • Reemay is a non-woven polyester fabric.
  • It used as a support media for documents to be repaired,  interleaving, or drying material. more info about Reemay: https://www.talasonline.com/Reemay
Organza:
A thin, plain weave, sheer fabric traditionally made from silk. Many modern organzas are woven with synthetic filament fibres such as polyester or nylon.
